Three violin concertos by British composers all equally fine in their own way:

        Christopher Headington

        David Morgan

        Lionel Sainsbury

The Morgan has been a particular favourite of mine ever since I first heard it broadcast in the mid 70’s, and I would go as far to venture that it qualifies as a masterpiece. (But hey, what do I know?)

There are some very fine and accessible 20th Century violin concertos. My favourite concertos are:
          1) Shostakovich No.1
          2) Elgar
          3) Walton
          4) Britten
          5) Korngold
          6) Barber
          7) Szymanowski No.1
          8) Shostakovich No.2
          9) EJ Moeran

The ones that I play the most often are the Walton, the Britten and the two Shostakovich concertos.

Of these, which do you find the most difficult to play?

The Berg Concerto is a doddle to play.

Kept those to yourself, didn't you? I've only ever heard of Mr Headington and then again would have been hard pushed to say he was a composer, had you applied a gun to my forehead.

But then again, as you say, what do I know?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

But it can be embarrassing if you haven't tuned up well ...

There is something odd with violin concertos and opus 35.
There are at least 4 of them: Tchaikovsky's, Busoni's, Korngold's and also Szymanowski's, of which the first three are in the same key of D-major as well

Btw, opus 61 is popular too: Beethoven, Caudella, Elgar, Saint Saens (3) and Szymanowski (2)

AFAIK a skiing accident (Karlowicz was killed by an avalanche triggered by himself during skiing/climbing)
