I'm sure tonights Panorama will show footage of the mean minded attempts to intimidate the local population by the hired in Irish contractors who acted almost as a para military force ....and in one case surrounded a property of a non compliant local with 50 foot piles of debris from the colossal earth moving done to 'improve' the landscape.....and cut off water supplies to certain locals....

Far be it from me to disagree with Anna, and not that I have anything against Scotsmen, but at the same time I think it only right to point out that Graeme McDowell is an Irishman. (see message 24)
Now, that devil in your comment? Could it be that you are referring to GMcD blotting his copybook by criticising the Castle Stuart course? Or what? Am I missing something scotty? I often do!

Of course McDowell is an Irishman, Padraig. I was simply amused at your typically diplomatic response and (somewhat mischievously) invited a rather more direct "clarification". Hence the "devil". Maybe a "winkeye" might have been more appropriate?
Of course it could be that Anna herself was indulging in a bit of mischievous teasing, in which case we both fell for it!
No I wasn't aware of McDowell's comments about the Castle Stuart course. My brother-in-law recently told me he played on the same course just over a fortnight ago and he and his golfing partners were mightily impressed, by all accounts.
However, as my brother-in-law would be the first to concede, none of them are "Graeme McDowells" ... and, just for the record, they are all Scotsmen!

I've selected a more positive sounding headline for the gender issue at Muirfield, and The Open.
I've rejected any attempt to make light of the issue.
What do others think?
Shocking.

The other rather salient point is that around 99.9999% of the Scottish male population will currently find themselves effectively barred from Muirfield membership as well. One has to know one who is already a member and be of "appropriate social status". The same could well be true for the equally discriminating ladies at Lundin Links.
Not that this is particularly unusual. My father put my name down on the waiting-list for Williamwood Golf Club near Glasgow when I was eleven years of age. I am just that bit slightly older now and I'm still bloody waiting.
Golf discriminates in terms of social class rather than gender. After all, wasn't Mary Queen of Scots playing the game when most of her male subjects had probably never even been permitted to hear of it never mind had access to this 'Game of Kings (& Queens)'.
Finally if busybody self-serving politicians like 'First Minister' Alex Salmond and 'Culture Minister' Maria Miller start preaching to the rest of us about who we should invite into our private clubs some might feel inclined to be tell them exactly what they can do with themselves (in the nicest possible forum way, of course).

Mary QoS certainly did play golf, but her gg grandfather James II had banned it, because it interfered with archery practice. I suppose that made it easier for her to get a tee-off time.

Ahem.....
Where were we? Women in golf? Oh yes.
The Solheim Cup has just finished - that's the Ryder Cup for women. It's a match between Europe and the USA. There can be a lot of needle involved.
Last time, two years ago, it was played in Ireland, and Europe won.
This time America hosted the match, and they had never been beaten at home.
That was to change dramatically. To cut a long and exciting story short, a new star, at least one, has been born, by the name of Charley Hull. A modest, brilliant seventeen year old, she led the rout of the talented American team, in a three-day tournament that was sporting, tense and provided some great golfing moments.
I can see a possible reason for keeping women like these out of certain golf clubs.

A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
