I find the use of gotta, em, waraya, innit, waza and such terribly useful when denoting conversation from the street....when I am being a proper jazzer, I of course put aroony on the end words....
When I went to a friend's house for Thanksgiving, I was seated next to an old-school beatnik jazz saxophonist. (If you want to know what he looked like, imagine the character "Shaggy" from the children's cartoon "Scooby Doo", only balding and old.) It was the first time I'd ever heard anyone refer to someone as "cat" non-ironically. As in "That cat really knew how to play the drums..." etc.

Question: Is this a normal way for contemporary jazzers to speak, or is he a walking anachronism? Just wondering.

Sorry to be a spoilsport but is there any way you could post Youtube clips as a link? My screen is not very big and I have reset to hide all the pictures but your videos still appear.

Yes, I was a bit annoyed at that filling my screen when I have pictures switched off. The setting doesn't seem to work on Youtubes?

Wether I am talking about brass bands, classical music, jazz or prog rock, I talk the same way! No airs and graces with me! Perish the thought!!

turn off javascript in your browser (or use Firefox and install noscript extension) - allowing javascript unchecked control of your computer is asking for trouble (and it usually comes),there is also an extension to control if you want to open a flash movie (again gives you back control) - likewise prevent auto opening of Adobe PDF files (and get a much safer program than adobe's to view them)

Yes Eine and more.....I'm unemployed on 1 Jan after 25 years. Father raised in council houses, lovely illiterate granny who ended her days in a South London tower block - that's working class ain't it?

Yes, Eudamonia, I think that is an excellent suggestion. I'd probably no be great for a regular top up but would be pleased to make occasional donations.

I think the Beeb could well have gone down this path. There always too caught up on the unviersality of the license fee, everything included etc., but as with the health service, messageboards were a complete add on and something never previously envisaged. If they had been financed outside of the license fee I doubt we'd have had to see their demise.

If and when the running cost needs to be covered, I would rather the Forum set up a subscription system than its depending on donations. With donations, I’ll never feel I have given enough and that will bother me.
