Tripoli arms caches looted

A worrying report form the Beeb suggests that Gaddafi's warehouses have been looted and thousands of sophisticated weapons - including missile launchers capable of bringing down a plane - have vanished. Their reporter also visited a building filled with around 100,000 land mines, all guarded by just one man. The fear is that these arms will fuel a new insurgency or find their way into terrorist hands. Apparently the rebels knew about these sites but made little effort to secure them.

So once more the international arms trade has created an unforeseen but potentially destabilising situation. And given the unrest in Cairo tonight it seems the Arab Spring has given way to a sudden chill.
