Framed within the terse technicolour of Hamnavoe, George Mackay Brown's masterverse, Owen Sheers TV programme is aglow with Orkney and the writer's deep history, brilliantly lit by snippets of Scottish folk, Max(well) Davies and Mendelssohn. A lovely half hour.

Thanks Chris. Wonderful writing and scenery in this very good programme. I was particularly interested to hear more about George Mackay Brown following Richard Price's piece about Iain Crichton Smith on "The Verb" in February. Both are great poets.

Thank you Chris. A delightful film. I visited him, I think around about the mid-1960s. The occasion was to present him with an award of some kind, now long forgotten.
Although I was a film cameraman at the time with the BBC I managed to get some fine 'stills' of those craggy features. We sat in his kitchen or on the pier & talked music - he had recently discovered
the 'late' Beethoven quartets which provided almost limitless opportunities for discussion but alas without the time we would have liked.
I see by the credits that Wales was responsible for the film - more shame on Scotland who, in my time, paid little regard to the arts. Although I did once 'get my own back' after being allowed to provide
some items for an Edinburgh Festival programme. I filmed a small ballet company interpreting an item of music of my choice & used the final movement from Bartok's last string quartet, no. 6 !!
I doubt the viewers had ever heard anything like it before.
Anyway, I shall attempt to save this programme on GMB & thank you again for drawing attention to an item of such delight, so rare these days.
