if anyone doesn't want to move to Manchester, I dare say there will plenty of people with the ability to fill their boots.. after all , these jobs are sought after rather than actually being all that difficult.
also, as regards work places, lots of people have to work in places like supermarkets, schools built mainly of asbestos, outdoors, and on buses.
(for example). They often get dreadful money for the privilege.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

people get asked to move all the time in their jobs, and people in highly sought after jobs surely understand that these demands come with the territory.
I would assume(maybe incorrectly) that there are opportunities to relocate to other areas /depts within the BBC that are not based in Manchester.
i have all the things you mention, based round me in wiltshire, and I would move to Manchester for a decent job at the BBC like a shot...and whats more my family would support me...... So it cuts both ways.I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

As far as I'm aware there is no requirement for the employees to live in Salford. You might be surprised at how pleasant some of the areas within an hour's drive. In fact it's reported that Alderley Edge in Cheshire has more millionaires per square mile than anywhere else in the countrySteve

I understand the BBC have arranged for a twice-daily shuttle delivery of piping-hot lattes and crayfish salads from Upper Street, N1. It's been put down in their tax submission as a Hardship Payment.

When my music publishing job [one of them] in London made us all redundant I couldn't move because my partner was London based and I had a home and elderly mother to keep me here. A young couple and several single people moved to Norfolk and within a year they had all been been made redundant again and found it much harder to find suitable work up there, beautiful though it is.
Luckily I soon found something else in London, think twice and three times before you move.

Mind you, when they find out that reps and builders are eating crayfish sarnies, they will soon change their diet !I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

well couldn't we outsource the whole r3 thing to NPR say .... or Japan? [might get a decent ration of jazz then] .... the organisation mind set that thinks that all work is eaasily digitised and mediated by hardware connection has already been shown to be dubious in most large corporate businesses .... my tuppence is on a cluster screw-up .... simply because Thompson and his mob are like that .... and it is a sop to the politicians too .... that said, long live decentralisation to the regions .....According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

However, there are quite a few sensible and tasteful southerners who live in leafy Cheshire by choice and commute to work in London every weekday.
Nearby Wilmslow has an excellent direct train service to the capital, the fastest now taking under two hours.
If some of these commuters are, by chance, BBC employees, any transfer by the organisation to Salford Quays could be the ultimate dream-move ..
