The BBC are off to Salford

I've just been reading about the horrendous building, designed to house the BBC, ITV and local University in the fair environs of Salford.

Reports are that many of the BBC employees are refusing point blank to be relocated. Quite right too! Who, in their right minds would swop Maidenhead and the Thames valley for Salford and the Manchester Ship Canal?
Sian Williams has already refused to go. What about Bill Turnbull and the other early morning presenters? Are they going to be picked up by BBC funded taxis at 0230 every morning?

I can foresee an even grimmer possiblity which could be brought about:

The BBC Salford Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra

A lovely way to integrate the BBC Philharmonic with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and save a lot of players' salaries - and pension contributions.

Am I joking? Don't think it can't happen.

    Good thing too
have you ever been there ?

I'd swap the Thames Valley for being able to live on the edge of the peak district any day

and there is a long established musical culture ........ Max and the Smiths for a start (not forgetting the poetic genius of John Cooper Clarke)

It is supposed to be the BRITISH Broadcasting Corporation
and the RNCM seems to attract some wonderful players and teachers

Which prompts the question: Are architects the best judges of a beautiful building?

And, personally, I'd say it's just as well SE based glamour staff refused to move and the jobs can go to other people.

Eh? Looks all right to me
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

What a great part of the world! So much happening, and such scenery - Peak District, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, Wales and the Marches all within an easy drive. Cost of living decidedly more comfortable. BBC Phil, Halle, RLPO, even CBSO within easy reach. Roads generally less congested. Why stay in the South-East?

This doesn't mean that you're mistaken about the threat to the BBCSO and BBC Phil, though.

What a splendid Sunday morning wind-up! It's about time that people were told the truth about the desert that is the North-West: no art galleries, no orchestras, no decent scenery, no airports, no decent soccer teams...

are BBC television programmes currently broadcast from Maidenhead? (I think that's what you're implying)

People have to work in worse buildings than that. I daresay it's good to work in a beautiful building, but the external appearance is hardly a deciding factor.

As for the orchestra, is Salford City not (to be) a co-sponsor with the BBC? You (VH) think that's a threat to the BBCSO's existence?

Perhaps the Thames Valley might be improved by shipping in the Lowry Centre and the Imperial War Museum North (the latter to be renamed, let's say, the Imperial War Museum Morse in honour of one of the area's finest detectives).

But look at all that light! I don't know about living in Salford, but who wouldn't want to work in an office with floor-to-ceiling glass windows with spectacular views of the water? Not too bad, if you ask me:

It'll do them good to see how people live outside Islington.

Will all staff who relocate be given a free bath in which to store to their coal, and a kennel allowance for their ferrets?
