Customs charges

This has probably been dealt with before on here but if it has I can't find it.

I ordered a boxed set direct from the Berliner Philharmoniker of the wartime Furtwangler recordings, which isn't cheap to start off with, but now understand from the tracking info that it's being held at a local depot in the UK awaiting payment of what I assume are customs charges. 'Customer notified' they say but I've not heard anything as yet.

Can someone give me an idea of how much this is likely to cost and how long I'm going to be waiting?

(Perhaps I can send the bill to my Brexit voting friend as I never voted for it!).

Should be VAT at 20 per cent. If you are a self employed musician you should be able to claim it back.

Not a self employed musician so I'll have to take the hit. I presume that they are writing to me and wonder if there is an option to pay by card as I want to get this set in time for my birthday in two weeks.

Yes I forgot that you’ld also have to be VAT registered which is a serious pain !

It depends on the carrier. The Petrenko/DSCH box set was delivered to me in France by La Poste so it's possible that it might be the Royal Mail or ParcelForce in the UK. On the assumption that the BPO sent you an email telling you that, "it's on its way", it should include a tracking number. If not, email the BPO and ask for that number. Unfortunately, you are liable to be stung with a "handling fee", as well as with VAT (I assume that you paid no TVA/VAT to the BPO when you ordered the set). Anyway, good luck! And hope that it arrives in time.

Royal Mail have the parcel. I've just had a look at the invoice and there is no mention of VAT and I did have the tracking number so I do, at least, know where it is.
