Well, I was trying to feel positive about England's chances against Australia. However, the loss of Leach for the rest of the season is a massive blow. England have spent a lot of time and effort establishing him as a reliable, consistent (if not particularly penetrative spinner) who would be able to get through a lot of overs and so provide enough resting time for the rest of their bowlers. In his absence the perennial lack of quality English spin bowling options is again very clear. The other options lack experience (Rehan Ahmed) or have not played at Test level for a considerable time (Liam Dawson) or have effectively retired from red ball cricket (Moeen Ali).
Another reason why restricting the county championship early rounds to April and May is limiting England's chance at Test level.Comment

So many individual instances to absorb from the 1st Test, and to integrate into a full assessment. But harping upon errors would detract from praising a magnificent contest between two well matched sides. I never like to call the outcome of a match until both sides have had an innings, but this was all square right up to the last session of the last day. With Edgbaston at capacity throughout, the crowd were entertained splendidly with Test cricket the winner. Glorious batting displays from Root and Khawaja, bowling from Lyon, Cummins; and Broad getting Warner (yet again) is always a cause for me to rejoice.
Round two commences next week at Lord’s; a selection of Aussie wines are already chilling…Comment

OK, yes, BUT as KEEPER?
IMO, Bairstow effectively lost Eng that Test. Had he done the job at those critical junctures, we might well / should have won with some comfort.Comment

Stokes/McCullum clearly want the Crawley/Stokes opening partnership to continue so for the moment there is no vacancy for Foakes unless you drop Bairstow which antong doesn't want to do (understandably).
I think Duckett may find his technique of playing effectively every ball he faces might get found out by Australia which might then create a vacancy and a reshuffle.Comment
