    Coronation mugs

Strange this - when I was young I was opposed to Royalty. I think my father was too - but one day he said "things could be worse - could have presidents like in some other countries".
I now seem to feel the same way.

So what about the Coronation? Should we all rush out and buy Coronation mugs? I remember I had one given to me at school - hopefully it's still the one we have on top of a piano, and I'd be sad to lose it. So should we buy such memorabilia this time round, even if we may have some misgivings about the roles that royals take on?

Also, are there no plans to give such things away to school children this time round - I may have had a flag or two as well last time?

    Strange question.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

There are those who appear to consider coronation mugs to be those who support it and are prepared to swear allegiance to the monarch...

I have no doubt that various commercial interests in China would be very happy for everyone to go and buy a mug and/or any of the other stuff now available at an outlet near to you.

I am still not a full blooded royalist, but despite that we do seem to have a better system in the UK than some other countries.

Regarding the mugs - it is a historical fact that I received a free mug at school around 70 years ago, and now I find that I look on that "gift" with some pleasure. Some of us round here probably remember watching the previous coronation on TV - black and white, rather faint picture on a small screen. It was quite exciting at the time, though maybe it was just the novelty of television which appealed. Arguably I got as much pleasure around that time from occasionally watching Bill and Ben and a few other programmes.

So there might be merit in buying a mug or two for the benefit of others, even if not for oneself.

I have just rushed to set the hard disc recorder to save Frankie Boyle's Farewell to the Monarchy from Channel 4+1. Frankie Boyke at his brilliant best.

Thanks for saving me the effort, Bryn. I missed this in preference for His Maj offering his views about Sir Hubert Poundbury!

....what ever are you talking about?....it is you that has had "benefit" [pleasure; one imagines] from the mug....so unless you regale us with knowledge of others who have had "benefit " etc etc....

....as a potter I have decided to come out of retirement to make a limited family edition May 7th mug (Inscribed - the day after the coronation : nothing much has changed Eh?)

The only pleasure I've had from my original coronation mug is seeing it on a shelf. I have never used it. As a memento of something which actually happened I value it.
I expect the same might happen to many new mugs, which perhaps might be given as gifts to people who either are more supportive of the royals, or who will perhaps appreciate one in many years to come.

I haven't picked up on the swearing allegiance thing, but there was something about that on the News last night. The idea that we'll all stand up and recite something in our homes is just .... dare I say .... bonkers!

On previous royal "occasions" I went out and fixed my cars. That doesn't mean I wish those involved any ill will, just that I'm not particularly interested in their antics.

Oddly I did enjoy the Trooping of the Colour last year - an amazing spectacle.

And no doubt some Tory supporters will benefit to the tune of millions of hard working tax payers' money for arranging such a good deal for the UK.

At least Emma Bridgewater's is made in Staffordshire, and is a good old Imperial measure, to boot: half a pint!

Why do we insist on 6th May 2023?
What's wrong with the far more esthetically pleasing (to me at least) 6 May 2023?

I don't criticise fancy-goods manufacturers and retailers for cashing in on the coronation by selling stuff. It's their business, and they've had a hard time recently. We don't have to buy it. But I do deplore the behaviour of journalists and TV presenters going on and on (and on) about 'bringing the Nation together' and 'defining what it means to be British'. I'm sure a lot of the anti-coronation feeling is a backlash against this sort of irritating rubbish rather than against the King himself.
