I'm with BT and EE is part of the group now. There was a BBC news clip with on-air people being surprised when the alert went off a bit early. (So we'll have a head start for the lifeboats).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Android phone's volume was turned right down but STILL the alarm seemed very loud, perhaps overriding unit's settings?
There goes my Plusnet theory, then - no alert on mine. Perhaps they don't bother sending it to citizens deemed expendable at a time of national emergency?

Can't believe everyone had actually switched their phone off, but maybe I underestimate the sensitivities of those in the cinema membership club.
I think the clue is in the word club.

I was in a rehearsal and it was surprising how many people's phones weren't on silent!

Do you mean in a rehearsal at 1500h yesterday? If so the alarm test would have come through on phones switched to silent as well.

Yup, they had to be powered off - or with THREE :-)

My Sony Xperia XZ on Virgin did not sound, either. Oh, and nothing on the Lenovo Yoga 5G laptop, but that was not so surprising.

.and if you do NOT OWN a 'smart phone'? No mention of that ANYWHERE!!!
Aha! But that means you are not a member of the human race so not worth alerting / saving?

Didn't make any sound on mine (on silent) but it did flash up the message.

Except on this gov't FAQ sheet I've just found
Will I still receive emergency alerts if I don’t have a smartphone?
Emergency alerts work on all 4G and 5G phone networks widely used by smartphones. This
will not include older ‘non-smart’ phones but the 3G technology that they use is being
switched off next year. If you do not have a compatible device, you’ll still be informed about
an emergency as the emergency services have other ways to warn you when there is a
                        threat to life.

This has also reminded me about the further exclusion move - switching off 3G. Reading through this https://www.ofcom.org.uk/phones-tele.../3g-switch-off suggests I don't need to do anything yet, and Tesco should contact me well ahead of time if I do - we'll see.
