    The end of summer

    (i) When is it ? (in my opinion it's TODAY !!)

    (ii) How do you feel about it ? ..... whenever it is.

    (iii) Can you think of any 'classical' works that deal with it ? (I can't)

    re (iii) I must revisit the words of Havergal Brian's Fifth Symphony.

      I seem to recollect that 'September' from the Four Last Songs has a very end-of-Summer feel to it ...and there's always that Last Rose, of course......

        When the maximum daytime temperature drops more consistently below 17 C (63 F) than rises above over a given period of days, say a fortnight, in my view. Today is therefore right on the threshold here in S London - and this is surprisingly early: 17 C being average maximum from October 1-10. Ideal for a 35 mile cycle ride I've been planning all summer, except it takes in Notting Hill Gate!

          Well, I think Autumn arrived here sometime ago. At the moment it's 15c (59c), last night was 8c and last week we had 4c at night. There has been no summer evening when it's been warm enough to sit outside without donning thick fleeces and boots. Generally I like Autumn, mellow mists and fruitfullness, frosts followed by brilliant blue skies, tree colours a riot of orange and red, hips and haws and berries. I pray we'll get some of that before we slide into yet another awful winter (snows started end of November here last year and continued through January of this year!)

            Thanks Anna, I'm almost feeling ready for the new season given those words.

              Here too, Anna - and London's usually so much warmer than Wales! But hey - thanks for the reminder - there must be several pannier fulls of blackberries waiting for gathering in the woods just down from me!

                It's whenever the school term starts. So this year, it's 5th September.

                  ](i) When is it ? As every year 21st September

                  (ii) How do you feel about it ? Sad at the prospect of shorter days and another spring and summer gone, but happy to be alive and look forward to what's next to enjoy!

                  (iii) Can you think of any 'classical' works that deal with it ? Autumn from Glazunov's Seasons is pretty cheerful, no point in listening to gloom, but I'll listen to the full work, not a breakfast-sized portion! Then maybe Mendelssohn's MND Inc Mus to take me back to warmer and longer days.

                    Two off the top of my head: Frank Bridge's orchestral miniature "There Is a Willow Lies Aslant a Brook" always evokes for me a silent, still, chill, grey and slightly misty day in the countryside in late November. The other being Panufnik's "Autumn Music" of 1967 - again a beautiful calm miniature, but portraying more an inner landscape of melancholy.

                      Not 'classical' but I love 'September Song,' sung by that man with the gravelly sad voice.

                        Finzi's short orchestral piece "The Fall of the Leaf" is one that comes to mind. Lovely.

                          What summer? Quite the worst since records began. Technically, of course it doesn't end until 21 September as any schoolboy or girl should know.

                            I didn't realise my mother did messageboards under an assumed name !
                            A great Summer IMV and so much fruit to harvest we will probably need to buy a 4th freezer (to add to the jam and dried fruit)

                              I don't know about schoolboy or schoolgirl knowledge of the seasons - but (as was discussed at length on another thread) for meteorologists -

                              autumn = sep oct nov
                              winter = dec jan feb
                              spring = mar apr may
                              summer = jun jul aug

                              So - for them as knows - the autumn will begin on 1 September.

                              I love the first days of autumn (and tho' it's August it's feeling like autumn already... ) - especially the suddenly chill mornings, life and sensibilities all sharpening up - then rapidly followed by gloom at the thought that things are going to get drabber, the days shorter for a - l o n g - time to come

                              In terms of music - my vote wd go to Haydn Der Herbst from The Seasons
