Rules can be good if everyone follows them, and/or if there are ways of enforcing them. They don’t work with people or organisations which are prepared to ignore any rules, or exploit them for their own purposes.

Sadly there are many people, organisations, even countries, who/which are prepared to not abide by any reasonable rules.

However some "generators" of such stuff seem very resistant. Reputable senders often have an unsubscribe button which works, or one can block their missives, or direct them straight to trash, or amend the frequency of posting etc.
OTOH some guys seem to have figured out ways to blast through any such measures.

Has anyone here figured out ways to deal with such bad authors?
Gmail seems very good. Very few bad authors get through, and declaring any that do as spam seems to deal with them in short order. Maybe experiment with a gmail account, register it with your persistently bad authors and see what happens? If it works well, register any new email sources with the gmail account and forward gmail messages to your current mail account.

Such rules as there are are mainly UK/ European ones. The rest of the world, with the US the main player, can ignore them with total impurity (sic).

I've failed totally after several attempts to get unsubscribed from a Spectator news update - infuriating!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I have been using gmail for many years, but only recently went back to using the online interface. I can do a lot with that to keep the mail under control. I have recently started doing the Spam register feature - but not sure if it works well enough yet. It is more powerful doing things this way than using an email client with other mail systems.

Is Spam register different from the Junkmail folder that Outlook 2007 uses?

I don't know - it will depend on how the Outlook email client interacts with the Gmail server. I use Apple kit, and it always seemed that the email client wasn't quite talking the same language as the server, judging by its behaviour. Outlook might be doing its own spam filtering.

To send/receive email anonymously, thus eliminating spam (and for added security) use something like Simple Login...

Actually, the whole video contains great tips for email management.
