Well, it doesn't actually specify that and it does specify "favourite" ones but, that said, this is rather what I'd thought as well - and I am unconvinced in any case that ABdePJ's anyone's favourite joke, funny or otherwise.

I must protest that I posted him as an an answer to a question, rather than an entirely new offering to the thread.

I don't understand (perhaps because I'm being a little dense); are you protesting against something that you yourself did rather than something else that you suggest that you might better have done?

I suspect that jean is using the word in this sense:

[REPORTING VERB] Declare (something) firmly and emphatically in response to doubt or accusation:
[WITH DIRECT SPEECH]: ‘I’m not being coy!’ Lucy protested
[WITH OBJECT]: she has always protested her innocence

Can't we just stick to posting jokes and humorous replies, and leave the smart-arsery and pedantry elsewhere?

                Agreed.
This joke thread is becoming an absolute joke.

No doubt, but who should offer and who might merit receiving said absolution?

Not sure if a more approprite place for this might be the Pedants' Paradise thread, but...

It is said to be unwise to seek to become engaged to be married immediately following the service of a custodial term - in other words, never end a sentence with a proposition.

If it was marriage you were after, wouldn't that be a proposal?

A proposition is something rather different. (I can assure you of this, having been in receipt of both.)

Must you pollute every thread with this silly pedantry? It gets really tedious.

See #1620; might there now be a risk that the thread could re-run from there?...
