    Turkey and Syria Earthquakes

The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) has launched an appeal; the UK Government is matching the public's donations pound for pound up to £5m.
Conflict in the Middle East is devastating lives. Millions across the region have fled their homes in search of safety, and urgently need shelter, food and basic supplies. Save lives. Donate now.

I wanted to make a contribution but was a bit wary of scammers. However, I found the DEC site yesterday and made a contribution. Somewhat less than £5m I regret to say, but every little helps, I hope. Thanks for posting that up kb.

We have a large Turkish community round here - they've had a community centre just up the road for years. Word went round on the street WhatsApp that they were busy loading up needed supplies (blankets, toiletries, babies nappies, soap &c), with a lorry leaving at 5am this morning, so I took stuff down there. I bought some stuff from the Coop and found a couple of blankets not used for years. One of the blankets had the wartime government utility mark - I'd been keeping it as a museum piece.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Saw talk of these charity donations on gb news, nice the way people try to help.
Annoyingly listening to and commenting on radio 3...

Yes, and we also have a charity called Shelter Box here in the SW, whose aim is to transport actual things (food, blankets, tents, etc) directly to disaster areas. We've contributed to them too,

In my post #2 where I found DEC online, it said that the government would match individual contributions £ for£. When the DEC put its appeal on the TV last night, there was no mention of this. Any reason?

As I read it, this appeal is matched £ for £ up to a certain limit (£5m?).

I believe I've heard, or read, both £2m and £5m.

It could depend on how much gets raised in the UK, but strange DEC didn't mention that.

The local Ukraine drop-in centre has two notices on its doors requesting specific donations - one for sending to Ukraine, one for Syria/Turkey.

                        .
... meanwhile some 600,000 have been killed in the recent / ongoing civil war in Ethiopia. To say nothing of what's happening in South Sudan, Somalia, the Congo. I weep for Ukraine and Syria and Turkey, of course I do. I worry sometimes that our 'sympathy' is more directly elicited by the sufferings of those 'closer' to us in various ways

                        .

Did not know about those conflicts, I suppose the news media are too busy focusing on missing people ?
