Leslie Phillips sets sail for the last time

The star was well known for the Carry On films and as the voice of the sorting hat in Harry Potter.

At the good old age of 98. Left hand down a bit.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I remember thinking, when I first saw him - it was in "Doctor in the House" - how old he (and the other male protagonists) looked for their parts as medical students. Leslie would have been 29 going on 30 at the time: men (especially men) looked older back in them days than they do now. He would probably have said "In them days" at one time earlier, being, believe it or not from his affected manner of speaking, of working class origins.

There goes the last of the Navy Lark cast. Only last week I picked up a double CD with four of the shows from 1967 for the vast sum of 20p in a charity shop in Tavistock!

Imagining the scenes in the NL programmes was much better than most things on TV!

          RIP Leslie
