    The makropolous case ...

Until reading the VW and Boult thread I had no idea that 'makropolous' was Nigel Simeone and it makes me wonder how many other member names conceal the identities of composers, critics and not just average-joe music lovers like me. RichardB and Alistair have shown their hands but who's there to be discovered?

Well, I'm sure some people prefer to be anonymous which is fair enough. In my case, Makropulos has never been a secret, more a handy name for posting under, given my enthusiasm for Janáček (among many other things).

Oh Lord! This is so scary!

I didn’t know who Macropolous was (sorry Nigel☹).

      Richard B & Alistair H I did know about.

      Who else lurks here?

If anything, it all makes me want to just shut the hell up with my opinions and creep further and further back into my shell…

Well, there was MRGG, whose identity some may have worked out, especially since recent mentions of him here. Oh, and on the old BBC forum, there was David Nice, though I forget the nom de plume he used. When outed, he appeared to flounce off in some dudgeon.

          Please don't do that Mario.
Your insights and questions are (usually, ha ha!) very interesting (even if you and I are a universe apart on the Missa Solemnis).

And lots (most?) of us are simply happy amateurs.

It's natural to want to know who's who. But it's a Rubicon.

I've always felt that , like the telephone and the aeroplane, the internet has brought more harm than good, but one of its benefits, I think, is that we can appear without preconceptions and pre-judgements about our age, sex, race, physical attributes, etc.

There are quite a few other members who post here occasionally, and one or two have passed away. But less well-known forumists should perhaps balance respect with the knowledge that we’re all equal in our right to express our views respectfully.

The mixture of people with different relationships to music making on this forum is one of the most attractive things about it, isn't it? There's not really any hard and fast difference between "professionals" and "amateurs". I'm sure Mario knows the music of Beethoven far better than I do.

Sorry Richard, but now you're just being silly...

Don't be so sure. Cornelius Cardew, for instance, was quite ignorant regarding the orchestral music of the likes of Schubert and Brahms. I well recall trying to discuss both Schubert's 'Great' C major Symphony's final movement and the slow movement of the Brahms 2nd Piano Concerto with him, only to find he knew neither work and had no interest in changing that situation.

Those familiar with the Anthony Powell dodecalogy, Dance to the Music of Time will know the character of Maclintick, a music critic, no less. I'll say no more.

                            Oh dear!

I do wonder sometimes if I’m going about music the right way.

Cardew knew his music better than I ever will but didn’t want to get to know “the orchestral music of the likes of Schubert and Brahms”.

Am I a member of the you’ll-never-drag-me-away-from-mainstream-Western-European-music-and-you’ll-never-succeed-in-stopping-me-from-listening-to-Brahms-and-Schubert brigade?

Is there any hope for me?

                            Am I a dying breed?

                            Is it oh … terminal?

Is there a support group somewhere for me?

Yes, right here; and you're part of it.
