I ran into Mr Improv a few times in Germany. I believe he was living in Hungary for a while. A very interesting, intelligent and politically engaged individual, although more recently he became something of a Covid conspiracy theorist, although he has that in common with many people who ought to know better. I've also met Ron Dough a number of times, including (in November 2009) when I was playing in Aberdeen and had a day off after the concert, and Ron took me for a drive through the countryside between there and Inverness, which is a part of the world I don't know at all. We lost touch a few years after that though. Ron was and presumably still is a big fan of the music of Martin Butler, another R3 forum regular, and turned up at a concert in Brighton where an orchestral work of Martin's was being played, in full Scots regalia, though he's an adopted Scotsman rather than born and bred if I'm not mistaken. Some of the London-based (or visiting) R3 forum members, as Bryn will remember, used to have occasional get-togethers in various watering holes in the capital, which were a lot of fun, particularly the first one which involved a lot of guessing people's identities. I am still in touch with George, though fairly infrequently. Of course many members of the old forum are on Facebook, though neither Ron nor George I believe.

Yes, I was on my way to Aberdeen and got off the train at I suppose it would have been Arbroath. Ron met me and we drove up to Glen Clova and hiked up the glen. He carried out a lengthy and entertaining board duologue with a character called Le Tombeau de Cooperman.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Was it a barrel of laughs?

As I recall, it was much enjoyed by all.

How we laughed at the hilarious joke that kept coming back over and over again.

Yes, I'd forgotten about that - highly amusing.

....what caused interesting or tense situations was of course the inability to PM....Until....the creation of TOP....which caused it's own problems for some . If you didn't fit in, no effort was made by TOP to ameliorate . Both forums had Moderators who would or wouldn't engage....[human beings probably]....If you tripped up at TOP , caused a faux pas it was hard to steer back in to the flow....and you'd get the same acid comments again and again no matter what your post was about....should someone 'guess' something about you - misunderstand your words/meaning it was all over as folk would weigh in....

....it was for many their first forays on the internet....lessons had to be learned....on the face of it fun/anger/laughter/frustration/education/stimulation/ abounded.... ....as you know....(I'm just hemming the garment....)

Late as I was coming onto the old BBC boards, I have much to regret, it seems.

Thanks again. I did not find what I was looking for - all the roads I followed led to current items eg one led to that quasi chancellor chap - he wasn't even a member in my time. But, there were a few laughs raised and some fond faded memories stirred. I'll go with that.

Neither of Simon B's links on #4 worked on mine, unfortunately - they just time out.

eighthobstruction's comments remind me of my own early days on the BBC boards. I found it hard to get used to the trolling, and got angry , which of course is what trolls want . And does anyone remember 'KleinesC', who I always felt was a BBC mole? Howveer heated the debate she woud never, ever, utter a word of criticism of Auntie...

Indeed, I wondered that myself Smittims! There were certainly some real characters on the boards back then.
                          Best regards,
                          Jonathan

And some who seemed very far from real.

Padraig and I hoped to meet him or find out about him when we visited one of his claimed favourite watering holes before a concert. Unfortunately, only being able to say his name was kleinesc didn't ring a bell with them!

I encountered him (not her) on another board amd he got in touch with me. What followed was, I am sorry to have to say, an experience that I would not care to repeat. Fantasists can sometimes be very risky people. I will not write about any of this here but, if anyone is interested, they're welcome to send me an email...
