I presume they are referring to the levy of fees/charges which tended to kick in when in overdraft, etc - are they now judged to have been unfair? If you didn't pay such fees, or not very much, then how can you be compensated for it?

In the great extended warranty misselling saga I received several emails telling me I could receive compensation. However, I had followed a rigorous policy of never taking one out. I think emails were sent on the basis they would yield a percentage of people who would respond, so effectively they were spam.
Thanks, to yourself and to Petrushka. The example presented in the link was to a redacted copy of a bank statement with a figure in the top right hand corner representing a charge for banking services which seemed to come with the account. Checking my own there is no such figure, so I'm guessing this doesn't apply to me.

Yes, it's the fact that scammers use legitimate cover companies (I regularly get emails from BT but can now see straight away that they are phishing) that has to be watched. Legitimate companies don't send out unsolicited emails touting for business.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
