    John Howard Davies: Dead.

BBC Comedy Producer and one-time Oliver Twist John Howard Davies has died:

John Howard Davies, the former child star who produced a string of comedy classics including Fawlty Towers and The Good Life, dies at the age of 72.

Always slightly sobering when a former 'child star' dies, as your defining image of them is of when they were young.

Clearly he was highly influential in giving us one of the very best comedy eras. Obviously all of the other great ones were earlier.

No, it isn't by MR James - I've just checked my Complete Ghost Stories of... and it ain't in there. Dickens? I'll have to check when I've got some time.

And David Hemmings, the original Miles in Britten's Turn of the Screw, then a rather louche photographer in Antonioni's Blow Up and his last role (I think) as a rotund character in a dodgy ginger syrup in Gladiator

Oh for to have been a child actor and to have acted with Robert Newton as the definitive Sykes!
