Alas, we’ve become so cynical with regards to these ‘coincidences’ that it might just be true! Perhaps he met with a very senior churchman who I believe has developed the same ailment, to discuss ‘forgiveness’…

It appears Her Majesty has also pulled out of the service.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

We've just listened to Front Row's cultural review of 1952. Joan Bakewell was on the panel and I was astonished to be reminded that she is old enough (89) to remember it well, being a student at Cambridge at the time.

Interesting connection . My Grandad was in the RAF also during the war after being in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in WW1 . I don’t know whether he was a huge fan of the monarchy but he really didn’t like the Nazis ( like a lot of Irishmen in fact ).

Can I scratch an itch? At these Royal occasions they always seem to wheel out, according to the media, "opera singer" Kathryn Jenkins, Dame Vera being somewhat indisposed I guess. Opera singer? She's never ever set foot in an opera has she, but is always named as such. Grrrrr.

Quite agree! She was supposed to have made an appearance in an opera, can’t remember which, pre pandemic but she mysteriously withdrew…

It's an itch I share (so to speak), but I was interested to see on a recent poster for some event in the region at which she was appearing that she was listed as "mezzo soprano" rather than "opera singer".

In the same vein, I am often slightly irritated (but also a bit amused) when someone...or usually someone's relative... is described as 'a concert pianist'. It means they are probably quite good, and may even have played on a stage. Perhaps at school?

I always say that she is a popular artist who sings pieces of operatic, and other music. And given the chance, go on to say she hasn't rehearsed an opera in production or appeared in a full performance of one, let alone making several performances in a run. (I assume she is also amplified.... say no more.)

I recall a newspaper interview, probably 10 or 15 years or more ago, when she said that on her memorial she wanted to be remembered as an artist who sang operatic pieces - so self aware (I was sure I noted the quote, but I can't locate it).. Its the publicists and promoters who make the extravagent claims for her, no doubt.....

The battle raged on her Wikipedia talk page, and her entry is now: "She is a mezzo-soprano and performs operatic arias, popular songs, musical theatre, and hymns." And "Genres: Crossover music, pop music, operatic pop". My memory is that she herself never claimed to be an 'opera singer' though she expressed an ambition to become one in the future.

The Presidential inauguration takes place on my birthday, so only every four years, and not always an event to celebrate (although the most recent one was certainly more welcome than its predecessor)

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Thus far I've only seen one street party - and that was yesterday, ten people in the garage back area of a block of flats. Just two front areas with bunting - that was on a 3-mile walkabout. None of the queues stacking up on burgers, barbecue fuel etc I'd have expected at the local Tescles just now. Welcome to the Peoples Republic of Upper Dulwich (lower case).
