Chaotic scenes au Stade de France

I am no adherent of football. I am in love with France, have many French friends, and am désolé about Brexit.
However the scenes at le Stade de France were pretty appalling and apparently not all due to Liverpool fans misbehaving. (It's all down to faux billets, so we're told by the French government.)

I thought I'd just comment on the CRS and tear gas, and it's not like me to grumble about anything French. Apart from Andouille perhaps! However, many years ago...30 maybe?.....we were on a choir tour and were due to give a concert in Quimper cathedral. About that time, the French government was trying to suppress the teaching of the Breton tongue in schools. There was a large but perfectly peaceful demonstation in the Quimper streets, with many children and adults waving pro-Breton flags.
We thought it rather wonderful. But suddenly the CRS arrived and tear-gas was sprayed all over the crowd without any warning. Luckily we were out of range, but were deeply shocked at this event which affected people of all ages.

It seems this sort of thing still happens, and with little provocation.

I was once told that the French National Police is basically an occupying force (ie a standing army) always in dread of a repeat of 1789.

Football. Liverpool. Brexit-caused travel chaos. Football. French police. The utter misery that is Britain this year. Did I mention football? A surefire cocktail of aggro that in past times would have properly kicked off.
