I’m surprised there’s been more comments about this great rock star. Yes, I do mean that. RIP

The world lost a musical icon today, as Meat Loaf passed away aged 74. What's less well known, however, was that he was a Hartlepool fan.

Looks like you’ve lost a supporter anton!

A Dead Ringer for Bryn Terfel in appearance and equally dramatic in their chosen genres, and I guess Jim Steinman’s surrogate alter ego!

      RIP Meat!

Apparently the artist formerly known as Meatloaf once met Prince Andrew - it's a shame he didn't avail himself of the opportunity to pass on tips about sweating.

Or even that ‘he shouldn’t do that!’

If you mean you're surprised there haven't been more comments, that's probably because there are many of us who really don't like the kind of music he made! I have to say though I think he was brilliant in the move Fight Club.

If you mean you thought he was brilliant in the movie Fight Club I would... have to concur.

True to say that, apart from one album that certainly had something going for it,( great song titles as much as anything I would say) he didn't really leave a very substantial musical legacy. He always seemed to present as a very decent person .

Yes but what wouldn't he do? We'll never know now.

Only a one-off? I seem to remember in Peter Sellers' "Balham Gateway to the South", one of the characters goes into the El Morocco Tea Room to be told that meat loaf salad is off. Meaning completely.

                            OK - a quick copy-and-paste.....

Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell still sells in its 1000s every year, so it isn't just nostalgia. There's a universal appeal there - a classic album but still alive. And he produced a generous handful of classic singles - I'll do anything for l Love but I won't do that (***), Two out of Three, You Took the Words etc etc...

His Pop-Metal style blended heavy rock with an almost Broadway-type melodrama and catchy melody.........
A word too, for his producer & chief creative collaborator Jim Steinman, who also brought Bonnie Tyler her biggest chart successes with Total Eclipse of the Heart...(the creative ramifications of such partnerships are often very diffuse)....

(***)Meat Loaf always refused to specify exactly what ....that was left to the listeners.... cool move ....)

I'm not sure what '1000s' per year would indicate, but certainly that it has a continuing attraction for some people.

(As some may have guessed, I don't speak from direct experience here: I think this is termed a 'desk-based assessment'). I was interested to check the words and the various interpretations assigned to them, and was struck that Bat out of Hell fits into two possible categories of popular song which began in the mid 50s but seem to have have continued for twenty years and longer. One was the 'car crash' (and bike) song of which Wikipedia lists what seems like 100 or more, and it was also around c 10 years ago when I went to the gym every morning that I heard Icona Pop's 'I Love It'; the second category which seems to be linked was the teenage tragedy song. I wonder how many of the real Meat Loaf fans are now in their mid 50s to 60s, and how popular he's been with younger generations.

More sociological than musical, but the interest seems to lie there, at least for me (says one who can say the music is not for me - but perhaps I just didn't encounter it at the 'right age).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
