i have just discovered that not only has jazz Library been shifted to a graveyard slot but there will now only be two new editions a month [oops] .... it must be Minimus the musical pig who's helicopter budget needs supplementing ...[what no triple choc chunkies on board]

Animal Farm is a fitting metaphor for AUNT Napoleon and Squealer looking after themselves very nicely thank you ....

I am afraid that what is happening to Radio 3; putative changes at BBC4 etc is symptomatic of our 'society' where 'everyone' knows the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

Clothing...even paying for what are ostensibly premium labels (NB not designer labels), one gets cloth of a quality that is much worse than clothes bought from the same label over ten years ago and which are still going strong. Interesting designed items for the home....almost disappeared now under the weight of tacky brasso-plated nick nacks from China. Small shops that used to sell the odd quirky item long gone. Interesting food items from Waitrose (eg Lord of the 100's cheese) gone ..at least from our branch. Seems that if a product only sells a little then it's removed and thus slowly erodes any differentiation that Waitrose might have had over, say, Tesco.

Marketed and hyped 'new' singers of dubious talent. Hayley Westenrah...for example. The latest bimbo to stick a violin under her coquettish chin with a plunging neckline on the cover.

        >>very appropriate a tarted up Americanised version of navy grog from the 1790's(which had the lime juice - hence 'limeys') presented as ethnic chic - just like world pap.

frances, that's one heck of an unhappy comment ( imo )

like this 'bunny' when for several years most evenings on R3 were given over to effectively pop music with a slight 'feel good' ethnic chic which had been refused a home on R1 or R2 - still see the late night slot lost to such tho I assume by RW's latest moves that it now lost much of its 'appeal' to the non-musical but 'life-style' critics who gave him publicity a few years ago.

Ho hum PS, get over it, poor old Frances has to share an island with Andy Kershaw, enough to drive anyone mad I should think - also don't forget that pap is the staple food of the Bantu tribe...although the word 'pap' is originally Afrikaans, therefore probably nicked from the Dutch. Er - what was the point again? Oh yes, 'pap' is nourishing food. Excellent, thanks.

              Anyroad up...

I'm sure this link has already been posted, but here it is again

actually since his stay at the old goverment run rest home on Victoria Road he is now pleasant to meet and looks a lot fitter (tho as one would expect rather full of himself even down to the bright yellow wellies, but guess that comes with being a dj)

my original jibe re pap was an attempt to mix pop + pablum but settled on pap as that on its own is boring.

                    Apologies.
I was foolishly confusing its useage with that cheap and nasty description beloved by the old R3 mb's lunatic fringe, for nearly a decade.

some fools are wise indeed and point out the truth ignored by many.

Personally I'd much rather BBC4 was left to carry to carry on doing what it clearly already does so well, without some of its best output being threatened a mere two months after the corporation announced it was spending £25m on a massive US talent show to rival The X Factor. What that says about the corporation's priorities will do little to soothe viewers concerned about quality content.
                          yep grauniad

Time for the ever-popular "This Week With Gove" slot. Get him back on Newsnight. Ask him which of the BBC television channels most closely reflects the Government's objectives for senior schools and why. Then get Hunt on there, and Thompson, to discuss his response. Incidentally, how often is Thompson interviewed on television? I don't recall.

I'd agree with whoever said that BBC4 is a poor shadow of the BBC2 of the 70s/early 80s.

But I'd also agree with whoever commented that it makes a virtue out of its limited funding.

The problem with beeb4 (and I'm sure some here will agree with me) is that it's not 'highbrow' enough.
