Two nations divided by a common language.

Just seen an item on the Freeview Red Button: "US shelter shocked after 800 parakeets handed over".

Does the editor concerned not know that what the Americans call parakeets, we know by their Australian name?

Well at least parakeet is correct, if not the term we use on this side of the pond. I assume the text was the result of just cutting and pasting what came with the programme.
Not as much of a problem as trunk/boot?

This was a Red Button news item, not a programme. As you surmise, likely a cut and paste situation, but that simply goes to reinforce the case for linguistic division. Though budgies fall within the wide range of small parrots, they are specifically of the Melopsittacus genus, indeed, its only member. In the UK we now also have widespread populations of the Ringneck Parakeet of the Psittacula genus.
