Well I've just now listened to what turned out an interesting discussion - one which left me at the point I came in, thinking the question of meaning is exactly that, a semantic matter. I was left thinking that two concepts absent from it were intelligence, and sensitivity. What do we (literally!) mean by intelligence - a more useful notion than meaning unless we mean meaningfulness - without which, however defined, there is no solving of the unresolved; and what do we mean by sensitivity? The latter is being applied in all manner of directions at present - from how sensitively (or not) we deal with cultural and other matters relating to identity on the one hand, to how we treat the ecosphere from which we emerged and upon which we depend. The role of stories, myths, came up towards the end of the programme, raised mainly by Bonnie and Will, tacitly leading to being touched on with regards to in what the stories consist and who is telling them - which for me leads back to matters of legitimacy, who has earned it, how did they get to where they did? and is not chief among the questions urgently needing to be addressed, who are we in relation to them and to each other, what circumstances would be more propitious than those of now to envisaging a common understanding of who and how we are, and how do we get to there from here?
