I’m reminded of Mel Brooks’ explanation of the difference between comedy and tragedy.

“Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.

I must admit I didn’t find the original story funny at all. My main reaction was to wonder how the bar staff and stewards at the Millennium Stadium a) allowed someone to get so drunk that they couldn’t speak and was unaware that they had vomited over themselves and other people, and b) allowed them to return to their seat in that state. If a pub routinely continued to serve people in that state with alcohol they would find it difficult to hold on to their license.

After that, I was pleased to see how many other members of the crowd tried to help out after the incident, including the person who offered to give up his shirt for the child.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

I laughed at that too. But probably shouldn't.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
