    Mince pies in the Co-op

As if we haven't enough to contend with, what with Covid, Energy, CO2 & food shortages, Boris quoting Kermit the frog...
The Co-op had two choices of boxes of MINCE PIES today - and I was tempted, for a moment, to stock up!

I always think Alok Sharma looks just like the newsreader in The Muppets!

Mrs CS wanted to get a fire-pit - well, really a metal container/grate for burning firewood in the garden seating area to provide a focal point, some radiant heat and a lot of heat to the atmosphere. I have little influence in these matters and limited myself to advocating quite a small one as our seating can't be pushed further away - its already distanced, in a loose circle as much as possible for Covid reasons.

Anyway I was taken to a large store (used to be a Homebase). To get to the "outdoor living" semi-enclosed area, we had to walk through several aisles of Christmas garlands, baubles, figures, lights, you name it, on the way to prolonging our summer "outdoor living". (I can see winter barbecues as the coming attraction in our socialising.......).

It felt quite surreal, and yes, Mrs CS did stop and take a look at something that caught her eye.... but we didn't buy.

Oh dear, I'm not going to be able to get rid of that image now.
Senseless seasonless retail was becoming the norm long before current inflicted and self-inflicted difficulties complicated matters. The classic is the Back to School promotions appearing long before the schools have even broken up for the summer. A combination of cynical marketing - as children don't stop growing just because they are on holiday(and despite the government trying to facilitate that by not providing replacements for school meals) - and heaping discomfort on unfortunate children facing September with oversized clothes to "grow into".
I can usually manage to ignore premature signs of the Feast of Conspicuous Consumption until the contents of the seasonal aisles start to infiltrate the everyday, and even then I can avert my eyes and am mostly able to avoid being in the same space. The real challenge comes with the aural assault, whether piped overhead or from the wretched novelty battery tat on the shelves.

You should have bought at least one, AD. I certainly shall if I see them. A mince pie is not just for Christmas you know.

That somehow made me think of Mr Pooter, adding: "but Carrie usually gets her way."

            Not that I'm suggesting you're a Nobody, CS …
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I sent the family a photo of a display of various varieties of mince pie on sale in M&S about 10 days ago (when it was around 31° outside). Reactions were… various…
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

My sister couldn't, and didn't, resist a box of them in M&S a couple of days ago - my Mum had one and reported it delicious. Today I did pass the butcher shop in Forfar where they were encouraging me to 'order now for C*******s! The way things are going we might have to cook it on the fire pit.

Turkey rustling could well be a winter crime wave - the free range growers will have a problem I think.

I’ve just purchased a second packet of Tes*o Finest stollen slices within a week as the first one was scoffed (not by me) in two days. Rum-laden and recommended.

That could well gobble up scarce police resources...
