    Pencils for musicians

The pencil generally recommended for orchestral/band/choral musicians is a 2B pencil with an eraser. These are widely available, so most players and singers are well catered for.

But here's the rub. I'm looking for a personalised version of the above. Almost universally, personalised pencils with erasers are the more common HB, which are less gently on the paper when used by the over-enthusiastic players/singers.

Unless, I can find a source of personalised 2B pencils with an eraser, the only options are compromising with HB pencils, or foregoing the erasers.

Does anyone know of a reliable source of my ideal musician's pencil?

When you say personalised do you mean with your name on, or the corporate version with the name of a group of musicians? I ask because as a schoolchild it was standard, unless a birthday had provided a box of named ones, to take a sliver off the end of a pencil and write the name in biro on the bare wood. I recently came across one such in a box of odds and ends in the loft, with my name in full and the class 4R, ie fourth form at grammar school; the rubber is no longer functional but I have always preferred separate good quality ones to those on pencil ends anyway. I still do this with my choir pencils - 2B as you say.

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Many thanks. I've sent them an email. The website suggests artwork can be added, but there's no obvious way to use plain text.

I'm intrigued about the requirement for a printed name, etc.

If they are for your personal use, perhaps the Faber-Castell Grip 2001 Eraser Caps would serve - can be placed over the point as a protector, and the qualities of it as an eraser is very good. I use them all the time (with my 2Bs - I'm pretty picky about the quality of the pencils and erasers I use (and sharpeners....))
I wait until they are £1.50 for 4 at the river people (frequent enough) and use them to get the order value up to free delivery.

I appreciate if they are to be issued to a music group - choir, orchestra etc, then this suggestion wouldn't work.....

This is indeed what they’re for.

Might something like this be a solution - labels to put on your pencils of choice?

                  .

... why do you (why does anyone?) want 'personalised' pencils?

                  I don't understand

                  .

Not really personalised. Just pencils with the name of the group.

... ah, thank you. For a group, to encourage esprit de corps &c, rather sweet.

I think 'personalised' pencils with the individual's name are fine for eight year olds. Any older than that, deeply naff

Does any one remember the Osmoroid music pen - a cartridge ink pen with an ultra wide nib?I used to use one for general writing .Quite a good pen but the nib could be bent relatively easily and it had slightly unpredictable ink flow. Now gone the way of the brown ball I guess...

Well I'll be naff then! If I have a pencil that I use for choir or whatever I rather prefer to get it back if possible if it gets mislaid or borrowed (with or without consent) to save having to find a replacement.

Which EA confirmed - for a group.

One of my choirs has found a very large, continuous covered area at a local secondary school (anything to keep the pupils outside in wet lunch breaks!).
Once we have moved a few table tennis tables, 4 groups of 30 (NO mixing between voice parts - at least until in the car park - for couples etc) . We can rehearse, and will have an informal concert, we hope, on the adjacent grassy area.

Perhaps we should have pencils, with the option of "Up yours Oliver Dowding!" for sale......
