    The power of the pun

I can personally vouch for the efficacy of the pun as a supplement, and follow-up, to ECT following a major breakdown.
It's very nice to have the opportunity to engage in punnery (as against punditry, something of which I hope never to be accused) with other exponents of such high-class banter.
Anybody who finds puns more than slightly irritating can groan, wince, close their eyes, roll their eyes, mutter some mild profanity under their breath - I'm sure other defence mechanisms are available - and move on.
There's nothing like a really serious illness to help one rediscover the pleasure to be had from word play, and there are only so many Times crosswords one can tackle in one day before boredom sets in and the brain seeks stimulation elsewhere. Another beneficial consequence is the ability to distinguish between 'child-like' and 'childish'.
I suspect that, generally speaking, punsters are also less likely to post angry posts which have sometimes been known to contain the odd ad hominem comment. I found it surprisingly easy to decide how poorly I rate anger.

Perhaps we need a :wince: emoji, L.
One of my favourite ever puns was in 'The Perishers', a cartoon strip from the Daily Mirror/Record (in Scotland). Imagine a total mess around the sink, dirty dishes, pots and pans etc everywhere, and Marlon the amiable, but not too bright lad in the middle of it - Wellington says: 'It's clearly a case of culinary thrombosis - a clot in the kitchen.' Still think it's funny.

I usually manage to avoid stresses and strains of any kind.

Anton, you and OG are most kind. Thank you. The great joy is finding them presented on a platter, so to speak. Yet I often have to struggle to find one out of the forthcoming publicity in RT, and have to make do with, what for me, are second best!

Two of the papers today, apparently, have greeted the England football win with the headline
                          It's coming Rome.
Is this a pun? I'm not sure. I understand what they mean by it, but that doesn't make it a pun.

Just like to share a master-pun (IMHO) by my late father, not usually a great wordsmith. He worked in an office with someone rather prone to malapropisms. One day she announced that a friend was in the pedriatic ward.

Dad: "Is that the sea between two incontinents?"
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Sounds like The Sun's lamentable lack of wit.

Cue "The Italian Job", "Ukraine, u saw, u were conquered" and other prematurely gloating witticisms (sic) over the coming days.

Me: I expect we will end up with "Roman Horror Day".
