I can personally vouch for the efficacy of the pun as a supplement, and follow-up, to ECT following a major breakdown.
It's very nice to have the opportunity to engage in punnery (as against punditry, something of which I hope never to be accused) with other exponents of such high-class banter.
Anybody who finds puns more than slightly irritating can groan, wince, close their eyes, roll their eyes, mutter some mild profanity under their breath - I'm sure other defence mechanisms are available - and move on.
There's nothing like a really serious illness to help one rediscover the pleasure to be had from word play, and there are only so many Times crosswords one can tackle in one day before boredom sets in and the brain seeks stimulation elsewhere. Another beneficial consequence is the ability to distinguish between 'child-like' and 'childish'.
I suspect that, generally speaking, punsters are also less likely to post angry posts which have sometimes been known to contain the odd ad hominem comment. I found it surprisingly easy to decide how poorly I rate anger.
