I just love the weightlifting - this guy is just a mountain of a man...or maybe a baddie from a Bond movie.

Georgia's Lasha Talakhadze wins the men's +109kg with a world record total lift of 488kg.

Great day yesterday seeing Scotland's Laura Muir take the silver in the 1500m - I was absolutely delighted for the local runner - she's a star...and my old home town, Paisley, had Jack Carlin win bronze in the men's sprint in the velodrome. Brilliant for the young man. Who says the Scots are only good at tennis?

I don't watch boxing much anymore really, but I make an exception during the Olympics from time-to-time - three rounds seems manageable as a spectator. Yesterday I caught the Middleweight gold medal match which was fought out between a Ukrainian and a Brazilian. For two and a half rounds the Ukrainian was punching the Brazilian all over the place and was out of sight on points, and then this...

Brazil's Hebert Sousa wins gold in the men's middleweight boxing by knocking out Ukraine's Oleksandr Khyzhniak with a brilliant punch.

Wow! That cannot be good for you!

...and Jason Kenny in the Keirin - sensational display!

It's been claimed that the Olympics diverted resources that could/should have been used for the benefit of the general public in Japan. What I do know for a fact is that my son, who lives in Tokyo and is in his mid-40s, reckons he'll be lucky to get his first jab before December.

That sounds odd - although I heard it said on the BBC news tonight. Wouldn't you expect the Olympics budget and the health budget to be ring-fenced? Perhaps things are done differently in Japan. But yes, poor that they aren't further advanced with vaccinations. I hope your son can get his sooner.

Eurosport (which is owned by Discovery) is showing the Olympics on its main two channels, and in 4K on its UHD channel, and in addition has 7 more channels showing live streams. Under this deal for tv rights, the BBC is only allowed to show two sports live at any one time; one on BBC1, and another on the red button. I believe the Eurosport/Discovery streams can be viewed online, but a subscription might be required. I get to see them as part of my virginmedia package.

                  BBC statement:

"We know that our audiences love the Olympics and we set a high bar for ourselves with our London 2012 coverage and since we began on Friday, there’s been lots of noise around our perceived lack of coverage for the Tokyo Games. Whilst we’d love to still have 24 live streams and our ‘never miss a moment’ offer from London and Rio in 2016, our new rights deal simply doesn’t allow it. In 2016 we announced that the IOC had awarded the pan-European rights for the Olympics to Discovery, meaning that free-to-air broadcasters across Europe had to carve out their own sub-licence deals with Discovery. The result for all European broadcasters was less coverage of the Games, and for us, it means that we’re allowed two live streams - one on BBC One and one that is available to play out on BBC iPlayer, red button and the BBC Sport website."

I also suspect that the BBC might not have a complete choice on what streams it can show, hence the other night Eurosport was showing the rowing finals live, while the BBC was showing a live stream of surfing. I would have thought the BBC would have preferred to show the rowing if it had a choice.
Thank you. I had worked that out over the course of the Games, but it is very disappointing. As was not being able to keep up with what was showing on the other channel: sometimes there was a Red Button sign up for "Live [whatever sport]", but often there wasn't, and I'd be watching something I wasn't hugely interested in on BBC1 and only later find out that there was something else rather more interesting on RB. So, this implies that there was no additional advantage to looking on iPlayer and the BBC Sport website over simply watching on the red button?
