Oh dear! The consequences of the dummies in the ECB scheduling no first class cricket for over a month came home to roost at Trent Bridge today. Four ducks is unforgivable. But the bowling of Bumrah and Shami was a treat to watch. If it’s overcast tomorrow morning, Broad and Anderson may be able to make inroads, but it looks like the weather will have an impact in the next few days if the forecasts are to be believed. Still, it was good to be back at a cricket match in nigh on two years.

Well done Joe! This is developing into a very exciting Test.... potentially a very close finish....weather permitting...

Here comes the shiny red cherry!

Just so....but there's not much will defend a ball like that from Bumrah..... wonderfully deserved acclaim for the Captain...

That was one of the finest day’s cricket at which I have attended. Root’s innings was exquisite. The bowling of Bumrah and Shami quite beautiful. And the bad weather held off until after the close of play.

England were 30 runs short imho, Root’s outstanding effort notwithstanding. India have to be favourites but it’s still a compelling match for sure. Bumrah was superb, agreed.

Let's hope rain doesn't spoil the day. Afternoon looks better. There could still be a result.

England’s weather gods are clearly more potent than India’s, who at least get the moral victory. England’s pluses are Root’s batting throughout the match, his century was a heady mixture of fluency, poise, grit, and elegance against bowling of the highest quality. Also Robinson’s impressive five wicket haul should cement his position in the series, barring injury. Minuses are England’s opening batting line-up, I can’t think of any comments to make in mitigation. Broad did not have a good Test, only a single wicket, his star seems to be fading well ahead of any diminution of Anderson’s powers. The Lord’s pitch will take spin, so Leach will be useful to have in the team (and when batting, he can hang around, which will be handy since Root was for ever losing partners). India can’t be complacent though. Only Rahul looked comfortable batting, and we must remember that Koli’s aggregate in this series so far is zero. But India’s bowlers were magnificent. Bumrah got a well earned five wicket haul, Shami’s figures don’t do him justice, and Thakur’s ball that did for poor Lawrence was unplayable. The fourth day was one of high drama and quality, which bodes well for the rest of the series. So, all square for going to Lord’s on Thursday, at least the weather looks kinder.

Statistics, and what do they know, would suggest we are in the presence of England’s greatest test batsman for 50 years …… he will now be out …

Hales is thought by many franchises all over the cricket world to be among the most awesome opening bats.
Why is he NOT in the England set-up?

Curious or what? anything to do with Morgan's own personal likes and dislikes

Hales, imho, has had his chance. He’s a bit of a hooligan, I surmise. England’s white ball setup is settled and successful. It’s the test team that’s wobbly. Root is a world class bat and a club class captain. There’s obvs stuff going on behind the scenes with Stokes, I purely speculate of course. But Aussie will ream us in the Ashes, even assuming a full strength team goes, what with Covid hesitancy etc etc. I sense lots of party lines being toed.
