Completely agree re these martial macho shops....
I was reported here in the local Sodom & Gomorrah Gazette TWO YEARS AGO that such establishments would have to stop selling such items, or be shut down. A list of shops was made public after the paper sent investigators into the shops asking if they sold said items.

      Food for thought

After Haringey council shuts eight of its 13 youth clubs, local teenagers express fears that boredom will fuel violence between young gang members on the streets of north London

Man, they got the JD Sport and the mobile phone store. I don't mind too much about those. A friend said they got the local CEX too. I hope not. I'll go by there tonight, check it's okay.

I guess mostly they're targeting chain stores 'cause of the stuff they got, rather than going for independent stores. I'm wondering what'll happen if they come further down the High Road, though, wonder if the Somali community'd defend their stores and area. I'd like to see a proper fightback. I don't buy excuses for this stuff.

If they walk out of a shop with 500 pairs of trainers and sell them cheaply to their mates, it is redistribution even if we don't like the methods.
I don't condone it in any way
Your second sentence seems to contradict the first....

If some low-life burgles me and nicks my stereo, I wouldn't call it redistribution. I'd call it theft.

One of the things I've found interesting about the reporting of this thuggery is that the colour of those involved has not been mentioned, despite the fact that it's as plain as the nose on my face that overwhelming majority are of a particular racial group.

But of course, one can't mention such facts these days.

I didn't realize they were burgling people's homes.

Not sure what point you are trying to make about race, Mr Pee. Looking at the lunchtime news footage of the events it seemed to me that most of the hooligans were white kids. Some people will no doubt put this down to selective coverage...

...yep typical outsourcing of the cost of community initiatives onto everyone's insurance premiums ...

Trouble now spread to Lewisham, not too far from where I live.

It was common knowledge that Hackney would be hit, shopkeepers were shutting up around 3.30pm, (so the Police should have been forewarned and out in strength), it's now spread to Clapham. I think earlier it was said Streatham would be targetted as well. As to the query raised above re colour, photos from Enfield show plenty of young (around 15 years old) white youths taking part although all the missile throwers seem to be masked and hooded. It's all so depressing.

Edit: Just watching scenes at Hackney. It's not a riot, it's not organised, it's groups of random teenages throwing tins and petrol bombs, setting fires, then moving away to another area. Completely mindless vandalism and civil disobedience, sort of like they're just having a laugh.

I live in Hackney and it wasn't known by me.

In their lust for justice, the local youth has destroyed the betting shop on Mare Street. I'm told that Dalston shopping centre was wrecked yesterday. That's the place to go for justice if you've been oppressed. The shops.

I knew it was going to be Hackney as it was in The Telegraph this afternoon! Didn't you realise you lived there Vi, hope you stay safe and well away from trouble. Yes, betting shops have tills full of money of course that's why they've been a target. There seem to be disturbances in various parts of N & S London now and reports of all shops with roller shutters pulling them down, inc. supermarkets like Sainsburys. Of course, apart from anything else this really targets people trying to get home. Edit: Now it's Harrow. Harrow? That's posh isn't it?

It seems to have got noisier since I got home and I feel sorry for the young men who run the Costcutter on Dalston Lane.

Wherever there are people who fancy a few pairs of knock-off trainers, there may be trouble. It's not the end of the world but it's despicable.

Well according to messages #22 & #26 there's a predominance of white kids involved - is that what you meant Mr Pee? Not like you to avoid bigging up something like that!

I just said I saw white kids in Enfield, but the majority seem to be black or asian but it's so difficult to tell with hoodies masking faces. I sincerely hope the bus set ablaze in Peckham didn't have any passengers aboard it. However, Boris is flying home to take charge!
