On Saturday I bought the Guardian for a change, partly for a less 'establishment' assessment of HRH's death and the reaction to same. I have to say I was disappointed in just about every respect, not least by the seriously uninformative TV and radio guide. I shall revert to The Times which, for me, is much better value at £2.20 - and would still be even at the Guardian's current price.

                  Haven't a clue.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

... but The Guardian has its excellencies - pertick'ly writers such as John Crace, and tv recaps on things like Unforgotten and Spiral.

I have the Kindle subscription which is £9.99 per month - despite that when I go on the website I’m told at 329 articles this year I am a top world user and I’m encouraged to stump up!

I tend now to shirk from clicking on the many Guardian links offered on this forum, much as I love them - not being a subscriber and feeling guilty with every reminder as to how many checks I've made over the past number of months. I think I must have been born with a very small ego but a very large superego!

Guilt and shame are two of the more insidious tools in the armoury of the marketing industry.

I have a Puritan sense that one should pay for what one uses and appreciates. Rather like the BBC, The Graun gets criticised by both ends of the political spectrum. I take cognisance of this fact without completely understanding it Now that Trump's gone, I've given up my sub to the NYT and unsubscribed from the Atlantic and WaPo, so shall be reading more of the Guardian, trying to figure out why it's considered any more than averagely left-wingish (O.Jones notwithstanding). I'm pleased to see that they have an obituary worthy of another just deceased figure, target of left and right, my political role model Shirley Williams.
