The reality is we'd end up with egotist celebs like Joanna Lumley. Far better to mandatorily assign the duty to someone by birth giving the country no say in the matter.

We would first need to decide whether we wanted a ceremonial head of state (like a monarchy in the UK and Spain), and an executive head of government (elected), or just one head of all (like the US). France has a president (elected) heading the executive and a prime minister (appointed) doing the daily donkey work. I think Russia is the same. Or like Germany, with a chancellor who is head of the executive and a 'political' president (elected) who acts as head of state. We Ourselves have a ceremonial Lord Mayor (appointed) and an executive mayor (elected) who makes all the important decisions).
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

My gut feeling is that regardless of who ran in a Presidential race, we'd end up with some old Tory grandee toff as president. The British are, at heart, extraordinarily conservative.

... thanks for the link : no, I didn't know it. Tasty cast list!

If it comes on Talking Pictures or the like I'll give it a whirl. I have an uneasy feeling it may be all a bit 'trying too hard', as so much absurdist stuff now feels...

                        .

Or do you mean, "someone by birth, giving the country no say in the matter?"

I don't remember that at all. I had left home by that time, mind, and had no TV, until 1983
