One person's perky finale is another's funeral oration. There's nothing offensive about Mozart (other than omitting the first two movements).

I thought I remembered hearing or reading that he was in favour of mass-sterilisation of much of Africa. Eugenics, anyone?

Sorry, that comes across to me as a sort, "this man I met in the pub" or "I read in a tweet" about it. If you cannot offer something in the way of provenance for that memory . . . There are plenty of stories on the internet about vaccines supposedly being used to sterilize Africans but there do not appear to be any claiming the DoE advocating mass-sterilization. If he had recommended such, don't you think there might be some reference to it on the Internet? If there is, I have been unable to find it.

Nice to see a post with which I can agree! There are plenty of other TV channels available if that's your thing or you can replace the R3 Stravinsky Day with your own on CD (as I did last Tuesday). Or take the opportunity to do something completely different. Every sympathy to the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family for their loss though.

Incidentally, I think that the Queen must be the last living person to have seen Elgar, when, as Princess Elizabeth, she attended a 1931 recording session of The Nursery Suite at Kingsway Hall.

Pity some poor chap has to die to get R3 to give us some babble-free music.

The continuity link refers generically to “the recent sad announcement”, which is a bit cookie cutter in the circs. And it would be nice to be told what we’re hearing (although I recognise some of the pieces, no performer details are being provided). Much better than Tearjerker of course.

That's a bold assertion, as Elgar was quite active in the two years between that session and his cancer diagnosis. For example he toured Paris and also met Yehudi Menuhin and William Walton in 1932. I think it unlikely that not a single child who has reached their nineties saw him during those years.

They are still bleating on about him on R4 - great pity they could not of had a dry run and asked Philip's opinion - my guess is that he would not have wanted this which reeks of the forced adulation seen in North Korea and other authoritarian regimes (tho I guess that is what the UK has become with rule by decree and an opposition that dare not even squeak let alone speak)

Who else would’ve served their country and be the Queen’s rock, like HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. RIP Sir.

I’ve often thought the same. I doubt whether he came into much contact with children after that, though there may have been just the odd grandchild of one of his friends who could still be around.

Same here, Alison Busily catching up with the historical background on COTW on Friday when the news broke. BBC coverage a bit much imho. As one might expect, carefully scripted and rehearsed, presenters sounding briefed for how to sound solemn on the radio.

Any chance of any new commissions for the funeral music, we wonder?
And the tune ends too soon for us all

                          Probably Lloyd-Webber and Gary Barlow!

I’m as guilty of horrendous solecisms as the next person, but this is laughably inept for a supposedly serious broadcaster.
Inept as you say(have they now corrected things?) but I have been astonished, particularly recently(during the time of HRH's hospitalisation) by the number of folks - including some who should know better - who think that HRH is the correct title when referring to HM The Queen. If the 'country of origin' can get it wrong so often then not surprising elsewhere can make a mistake?

Helps to reduce the chance of mistakes if you've been pulled in for an all-nighter at zero notice?
