I hope that your provocations do not lead to the temporary, or indeed permanent, closure of this thread, depriving other members of the opportunity of expressing their views. This is a publicly visible forum, which can be read by anyone on the internet. Whatever one's political views of the monarchy, a degree of decorum is IMV appropriate.

My sister lives in Vanuatu in the South Pacific. On the island of Tanna they worshiped Prince Philip as a God, believing him to have been born under the volcano as the son of the mountain deity. He was regularly invited to visit there, but never took up the offer. Anyway, don't let anyone tell you he was Greek.

The head of state does not have to be either a member of a privileged hereditary elite, or a corrupt politician.
In fact it should be neither. Very straightforward.
You've hit the nail on the head. Perfect.Teamsaint!

A little reminiscence here. My mother was the Liberal Mayor (referred to as Mr Mayor!!) of a certain Midlands Borough which was the venue of the last ever WORLD Scout Jamboree opened by The Queen. My Mum was furious that the Borough had to fork out for a completely new, pink-tiled TOILET in the Town Hall, because it was unthinkable that The Queen should pee in one that had had been used by anyone else. Doesn't that sum up the myth (is that the right word?) of monarchy?

After today's barrage of royal fawning from the British Brainwashing Corporation it feels as though we are still living in a feudal society.

            See my #73 above...

            (Have you visited your sister?)
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Never been, Nick...just a wee bit far for me...sorry I missed your post. Helen says there will be a big commemorations on Tanna as people start to wake up there. During the last visit that Charles made to Vanuatu he met people from the island who presented him with gifts as he was the son of the deity.

Well, leaving aside the loaded epithets of 'privileged' and 'corrupt' what would you propose? A hereditary head of state who was neither privileged nor elite? an honest politician? There is inheritance, there is election. There would be appointment too, but I doubt you mean that.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

It's very sad that people are still impressed by this ludicrous feudal throwback whose wealth was essentially stolen.
There are many within the business, industry, sport and charity fields who would beg to differ about lack of achievement. His advocacy and support through such roles as president of various organisations carried weight, something I am aware of from my grandfather's experience. Whether it is desirable that the involvement of a member of the Royal Family should be influential is another argument and would also have to include that role by politicians(ex or otherwise) and the like as well.

Time for people to recognise him for what he really was. Not a life we should be celebrating.
If you had written that about Prince Andrew I would agree.
His well publicised 'gaffes' pale into insignificance I would suggest in light of the antics of the current PM who not only has no moral code or sense of duty but deliberately and I suspect maliciously writes and says offensive things in the full knowledge that it is unacceptable, and doubtless will continue to do so.

So Prince Philip gets let off the hook for the mere existence of Boris Johnson?

I think some people try to take a balanced point of view. Those who start off with a point of view and aren't influenced by 'mitigating' factors will continue undeterred. There are principles and there are prejudices.

Petroc was originally scheduled to present from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m., followed by Penny Gore from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m.
Most of tomorrow's output will comprise sequences by various presenters.
