Prince Philip: Queen shares one of her favourite photos

The Queen has shared one of her favourite photographs of herself with her husband of 73 years, the Duke of Edinburgh....The royal couple are pictured relaxing on the grass at a beauty spot in Aberdeenshire in the photo taken by the Countess of Wessex in 2003.

I posted this link earlier as this private photograph of the Queen and her husband at a picnic - with none of the ceremony and so on - is to me, more moving than the whole of yesterday's military funeral ceremony, let alone the kerfuffle on the day of the Duke's death.

Have to confess that the only thing I knew about him was his 'slitty-eyed' comment. Just goes to show how little and shallow was my knowledge. He achieved a heck of a lot for an awful lot of people. Seriously impressive chap.

Here's an interesting piece by Will Hutton in today's Observer 'The night Prince Philip told me he was a "European mongrel", and happy that way'. Philip revealling himself, counter-intuitvely, as a European.

It was inevitable that his public role of walking two steps behind the Queen would be seen as his only role by the majority of people, and many of the comments I have read and heard suggest that his life was as a consequence one long jolly, and not worth commemorating. The idea that he had a life aside from that role just doesn't enter the consciousness, but in some respects that doesn't matter since he himself wasn't after plaudits, and those who benefited in whatever field knew and they were the ones who mattered, not the world's press.
