The BBC are reversing this decision, and are proposing to bring BBC THREE back to terrestrial television with a greatly increased budget (double its current level). Indeed, one of the reasons for the cuts being proposed for BBC4, and the reduction in new commissions is to fund BBC THREE's return. As the channel will be aimed at audiences aged 16-34, most of whom now watch online anyway, this seems to be a rather dubious move.

I hadn't caught up with that - I suppose the new DG's idea.

Does it mean that the BBC is now over its financial crisis - which saw the potential axing of 6 Music, rumours of cutting BBC THREE and BBC FOUR, cuts in budgets all round? Or is it just the latest phase of 'Get them young and they're yours for life'? I suspect the latter with budgets squeezed elsewhere.

Indeed, hence my "has been", rather than "is". My point, however, was aimed at questioning Davies' claim that |Tearjerker had to be broadcast over the air in order to make it available on Sounds (formerly part of the iPlayer). Why not set up a Sounds-only "Radio 3Less", after the fashion of Radio 1Xtra?

Although the BBC is planning to devote an additional £40m to BBC three annually, its plans also include £950m in cuts and savings elsewhere. I suspect Radio 3’s and the BBCCO’s move to Salford will also be expected to deliver savings to assist the Beeb’s relentless pursuit of youth programming.

An additional £40m? They could close down Radio 3 completely and it would only just cover that 'additional' amount. The BBC has really got the bit between its teeth as regards cutting back on "non mass culture with a centuries-long history". At one time the senior tier of management considered it 'of value' even if, like Reith, they didn't have much use for it personally. Now that that tier of management is increasingly in the 35-45 age band they become less and less aware of its existence, beyond the fact that it consumes millions of BBC cash (which could be used more 'strategically').

Update: I see from the Annual Accounts 2019/20 R3 content cost £36m, a cut from £39m in 2018/19.

Which sounds like the government's "new money" line, the translation of which is "already allocated money/nicked from other budgets". So is it truly "additional" or is it from the cuts elsewhere?

Well, it’s certainly additional for BBC THREE, but will have to be found from within the BBC’s overall budget, which is expected to be £950m less than last year. So I think ‘nicked from other budgets’ is a reasonable summary.

This is, I think, the updated version of my five-year-old AirTurn BT-105. Once you’ve tried one of these, there’s no going back!

AirTurn is based in Boulder, Colorado, and my unit is ‘Made in USA’. Easy to pair with an iPad. RH pedal turns one page forward, LH pedal one back. I place it to the left of the lyre or una corda pedal and operate it with the left foot; just make sure you aren’t using the ‘soft’ pedal while turning pages!

Due to my living circumstances, I listen to music through headphones and never use speakers. To horrify you even further, my R3 listening consists almost exclusively of podcasts: Record Review/Building a Library and CotW, with the occasional Private Passions and Classical Fix. Spotify and cheap CDs bought on eBay fill the gaps.

Excellent choice Hitch! R3 still has a few gems in its output.

Thanks to Keraulophone, I've now ordered this wonderful contraption, in the hope of improving my pathetic Grade 2 piano effort.

I have to confess that I ordered this from Amazon.de rather than Amazon.uk, to reduce the extra Brexit costs, since delivery to here, another EU country, sometimes helps!

                              Sorry...

With the ability to auto-turn pages, Grade 3 will surely beckon, Auferstehen!
