Our kitchen radio is on all day and veers between 3 and 4 according to preference - sometimes neither. The only extra station is Radio Suffolk on a match afternoon for the (currently) regular dose of gloom with added nostalgia for the days of Bobby and Sir Alf.

The way things are going, there could be a 'Forum derby' of sorts if the Tractor Boys end up playing the Owls next season. Amazing to think that it's nearly 59 years since I saw the win against Aston Villa that clinched the old First Division title thanks to Chelsea's draw at Burnley.

I must say (and I’ve been wondering for a while about posting this on the tech forum as possibly useful info) that the turning point was acquiring an iPad Pro.

The multi-speaker configuration on all sides of the iPad Pro (which is in a different league from the basic iPad which just has a pair of inferior speakers at one end) gives a quality and volume of sound which is constantly surprising and almost the equal of the bedside DAB radio (“Pure” Evoke-3).

It means that Qobuz or Sounds can indeed be on all day if required, moving to any room and enabling the cherry-picking referred to up-thread plus strategic avoidance of the increasing number of teeth-grinding aspects of Radio 3

How likely is it that the younger elements of the population who presumably form at least part of the target audience for 'Tearjerker' or whatever it's now called will actually be awake, let alone functioning or eagerly seeking new musical experiences, at that time? As I've mentioned elsewhere, I'm happy to tune to Radio 2 from 0600 to 0800 on Saturday mornings, especially as Pick Of The Pops now clearly has no wish to attract people of my generation!

If they are going to be listening other than in real time on the radio then it doesn't need to be on R3 at all, as there will be no immediate continuation to heavier (by contrast) content. The "needs to be broadcast first" argument never did hold water, as it just made the "then put it on a more appropriate station" case stronger.

You might get some good deals on the current crop of iPad Pros soon (I have the smaller of the - I think - two sizes available of the 2020 incarnation, replacing an early Pro), as rumour has it that a new 2021 iPad Pro is to be announced imminently. That might mean some good prices for ‘previous edition’ or used units. (As long as the screen is 100%, there’s pretty much nothing that can have gone wrong with used ones)

Also, why have different rules for the other "3", the BBC THREE television channel which has been iPlayer only for quite some time, (with occasional repeats of some programmes over the 'air' on other channels)?

This remarkable slate of technology has changed my internet behaviour, though I mainly bought the 12.9” 2nd generation iPad Pro to use on a grand piano with the sound-blocking music desk removed. Scores downloaded gratis from IMSLP to the forScore app look perfect on the iPad’s wider (than my Samsung tablet’s) screen in portrait mode. Coupled with a Bluetooth page-turning pedal, it has been essential to my enjoyment of the sound of the Bösendorfer radiating more directly to my ears.

When its orientation is changed from landscape to portrait, the iPad Pro’s two upper loudspeakers cleverly maintain a ‘tweeter mode’ configuration while the two lower ones take on the lower frequencies. The full and clear soundscape is remarkable for such a slim device, and, on the 12.9” version at any rate, so is the stereo image.

I wrote on the techie board for advice at the time of the demise of Windows 7 as to whether I should continue to use or replace my faithful but now crippled (by Microsoft) Dell XPS15 laptop. I have since only used it as an offline library, and many of its day-to-day functions have very efficiently been taken over by the iPad Pro, leaving more complex work like photo editing to the desktop PC.

I haven’t used a laptop for a couple of years now.

The soundscape/stereo image points you make are true of my 11” version too (and yes, it’s clever what happens to the speaker deployment when you turn it. The best sound stage is when it’s in landscape position though, imo)

Very interested in the Bluetooth pedal particularly as my page turning on the iPad consists of a hit and miss right hand swipe that only really works If the rhs has half bars rest AND you get the pressure and timing of the swipe to a Pollini level of accuracy.The speaker system sounds remarkably clever.
