As if it couldn't get any worse; well, it will ::https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-56433109

Radio 3 will be rooted in Salford, along with the majority of 6 Music.

As some one based in the regions I think it’s a great idea...

And the "top-to-bottom change" has literally been going on longer than some of us like to remember.

M50 doesn't have quite the same ring to it as W1A, does it?
I wonder if people will get lost trying to get there.
They might think they're supposed to be heading off down the motorway to Ross-on-Wye.

Well, I can think of a few who might do better for the audiences of their progs by taking that wrong turning...and getting lost in wherever...

“Radio 3 will be rooted in Salford” .......

So we will sack someone born in Manchester and replace them with someone who doesn’t sound as if they were raised in Cambois ......

All part of the "Refresh" agenda? I might have been more inclined to believe the announcement if it had said the move was mainly economic - premises, living costs(= salaries) cheaper outside London. The change to a less London-centric mindset is hogwash; just moving personnel elsewhere doesn't suddenly change their perspective, which will stay rooted in the company 'culture', unless given permission and freedom to do differently.

They did have this wizard idea a few years back of using local radio presenters from Radio Merseyside, Radio Lancashire &c. for classical music programmes - eg Breakfast. Perhaps they'll try it again.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                          .

                          ... from the Guardian piece in Draco's #7 -

"One of the biggest challenges for the BBC will be convincing existing big-name presenters and top executives to move to the new locations, rather than simply commuting from London. The BBC confirmed that all of the corporation’s existing London-based executive board members are expected to remain based in the capital. / ... / . However, staff on many of the affected London-based teams told the Guardian they expected the vast majority of their colleagues to take redundancy rather than uproot their families and relocate elsewhere in the country."

In the early '90s the British Council tried to move half of its operation to Manchester. To no-one's surprise, few of the top executives and other key staff who had established roots in London were willing to make the move. Despite 'attractive financial resettlement packages' many left or found reasons to accept hitherto unthought-of overseas postings. With major recruitment of new staff to fill the gaps there was a great loss of 'corporate memory'. I don't think the move was considered a success - they moved out from their purpose-built Manchester headquarters after five years. Subsequent loss of contracts meant the operation had to be slimmed down, and 'British Council Manchester' reverted to being a local hub rather than being nationally significant.

                          .

No one would know (if he didn't mention it at least twice in his Sunday Breakfast progamme) that Martin Handley is broadcasting from home, with a producer also somewhere at home and a bod in W1A twiddling the knobs. Followed by Sarah Walker from her garden shed. The technology for doing this has improved considerably since it began in March last year.

Will this move mean that more of our 'well-loved voices' will be broadcasting from home, rather than trekking up to Salford?
