Today we have three men and a cherry picker along to check and if necessary clear out our rain gutters. Last time it was to prune mature trees adjacent to the block, and a high-powered battery driven elevator platform was brought with a sophisticated lifting arrangement whereby the legs of the device could be variously bent and twisted to ensure a level base from which to launch the platform with its long arm. This time a different firm, and a petrol or diesel-driven vehicle on a caterpillar, and just four spindly legs nearly doing the splits, operated from ground level only. At least last time the guy up top could let himself down should his colleagues absent themselves. Watching them and wondering if this would be an update of that accident-waiting-to-happen film "The Plank", shown twice recently on digital channels, they just about managed to rig up on the sloping ground, planting the thing's spider's legs on hastily sawed bits of timber and sending one of the two young Polish guys 50 feet up the side of the building. I had to look away - no idea how thoroughly the job was done. He was all right - I have no finger nails left, but this time, unlike last, little damage appears to have been done to the turf, one benefit of using less weighty plant.

You probably realise this anyway but the same applies as it does to Lezlee's bill of 5p: it's an obvious error so don't ignore it! Not knowing how you pay (direct debit, cheque or card online?) it's unclear how such an error might have occurred but the problem is that obvious errors have a habit of escalating to something that is a nightmare to unravel. I'm assuming that the money isn't actually in your bank account but lying in your Bulb Energy account so the 'money' isn't yours to repay.

I'd take steps to sort it out without delay.

Thanks Pet, I already have. Not sure that I'd recommend Bulb as a service provider though.

May I suggest that in any communication with such errant suppliers, you include a statement of your scale of charges for the time you spend trying to correct their errors?

You could try but not sure you'd get anywhere! Mind, I did once get EON to write off around £1000 for blatant overcharging from wrongly 'estimated' bills so I went away satisfied.

It might be worth checking that the email is definitely from Scottish Gas ..

Good point. It does have the feel of a phishing expedition.

It reminds me of the story my parents heard from a friend who once received a bill for £0.00 for electricity charges. A reminder arrived a few weeks later, followed by a red letter-headed final reminder that if the amount of £0.00 was not paid in the next 6 working days the recipient would have her electricity cut off. So, the person in question sent in a cheque - for the amount of £0.00, duly signed... No action was taken, and nothing further was heard!

This is my first bill after changing supplier. I pay online by card but they won't let me pay less than £2. Don't know why they can't just add it on to next month. Better phone them I suppose.

Talking of EON, I've just had an email from them detailing increased charges from April 1 due to the Government cap as well as changes to T&C. The price, already eye-wateringly expensive, is going up by around £100 per year. Terms and conditions, not that the changes are likely bother me much, are frankly draconian. All tariffs are being increased so there's no point in changing and if I was thinking of looking elsewhere, they'll all be doing the same anyway.

So it's a case of like it or lump it!

With so many people working from home during these winter months the energy companies must have done very nicely out of the pandemic and price increases like this could tip some people over the edge.

Actual monthly-usage price-increases to the user don't necessarily apply if you choose a fixed deal though. I just took a two-year fixed deal with Scottish Power, with no exit penalty and even a donation to Beat Cancer. My monthly DD will immediately reduce by nearly £50 for the next 3 months, subject afterward to my usage, as ever. I was surprised at the generous offers available, all cheaper than the standard one I was on, which wasn't the case last year. I didn't need telling twice!

So if you don't want to switch, be sure to check alternative EON tariffs. Having said that, with long experience of most energy companies through property matters, they and EDF are among the very worst on every level, customer service most of all.

You don't have to do any switching yourself of course. Companies like LAMB (or similar e.g. Flipper) will do it for you, finding the best deals and offering you the choices. I haven't used this yet, but its worth a close look at their service, now well-established and generally well-regarded.
