I Am At My Peak - Honestly ......

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song
    I'm twenty-two now, but I won't be for long
    Time hurries on
And the leaves that are green turn to brown
And they whither with the wind
And they crumble in your hand ......

So wrote a man now on the verge of 80 ......

Is there a range of years when a composer is at their peak ....... ?????

That same man at the age of 27 or thereabouts wrote a song including the words

‘Can you imagine us years from today
    Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange to be seventy’

How quickly those years have gone.

In answer to your question, anton, the answer is yes, probably but it is not that simple.

"Will you still need me, will you still love me, when I'm sixty-five?"

Well I'm 75, and the answer has truly been no, for a good few years longer than ten!

Reminds me of that cartoon strip "Classical music is boring", spoof television news on the death of Elliott Carter. After a brief rundown of his lifetime's achievements:

"Well, that was a pretty remarkable career, Cody, and he'd only just finished his last piece."

"Indeed it was. Does it say how he died?"

        "He was 103 …"
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

... I wd say Rameau was at his greatest from the ages of 65 to 79 - the period from Zaïs and Pigmalion, through Zoroastre and Anacréon to les Boréades.

May be there is still some hope...

              .
And of course one shouldn't overlook Leos Janacek, most of whose finest music was composed after he reached the age of 70.
