I didn't intend any discourtesy to DB: in every one of my posts, I was commenting in reply to something someone said to me, twice after being asked specifically for my input (e.g. "maybe cavatina can comment", "is Marcel an easy read", etc.) I only put all these strands of thought in separate posts to avoid being accused of being "overlengthy".

If you don't think I ever have anything interesting to contribute that's worth reading, why not put me in your filter files and be done with it? I honestly wouldn't mind.

Well, given that the context was the spiritual meaning of excess, ("Bataille explores where this Experience still lingers - in the festival, eroticism, sickness, art, war, financial spilling, violence, etc." I assume he means extravagant, reckless, lavish, wasteful spending.

whatever it is people think they know about you, make sure they're always at least a little bit wrong. Although many of the top players debate whether it's best to be tight or loose at high levels of play, everyone agrees that for average games, a tight/aggressive style of play has a better outcome in the long run: be very selective with your starting hands, but once you commit to playing a hand, go for broke and raise the hell out of everybody. The more advanced you are and the better you know the odds, the more flexible you can be in making your table persona and playing style fit the game you happen to be in. Surrounded by tight players? Loosen up and bluff them. Surrounded by loose players? Tighten up and aggressively swoop in and kill them when you have a hand that's likely to have the best odds. And as Richard Nixon once said, "Never underestimate your opponent's ability to underestimate you".

Actually, that paragraph is a pretty fair assessment of my approach to most things.

That is very revealing, as a statement of personal principle.

IF, cavatina, it really is your approach to "most things" - significant choice of word there - then I think that transplanting what would doubtless be the survivalist's "no brainer" in a cut-throat world of American dog-eat-dog capitalism to this side of The Pond,, i.e. treating fellow human beings as manipulable bets in some inauthentic game of your own devising, you will eventually be rumbled.

For some of us you already have.
