    My sincere thanks ....

... to all those people who have contacted me thanking me for my modest efforts to encourage more people to enjoy, and contribute to, discussion of serious topics. I will endeavour to examine some of my more egregious faults while remaining outrageously cheerful - which, let's face it, isn't easy in these troublous times. The Forum offers us all a wonderful means of cheering one another up and I would never dream of abusing that privilege.

I've enjoyed your posts, finding many of them stimulating, informative and entertaining. But I think you should try to 'fit in' with the forum's ethos. All forums have a tacit 'profile' of a forum member and if you Jar against it, it causes friction, gets in the way and spoils it for others. But please do keep on posting!

I’ve not seen the ‘profile’ Bert!

I have edited my post accordingly (simply changing one word, 'unwritten' to 'tacit')

Really? Apart from rules brought in because of "Jarring" regarding discussion of religious or political topics (see House Rules) I personally am not aware of any such "profile", tacit, unwritten or otherwise.

I suspect it simply means a 'profile' which other members create in their minds of fellow members. As for 'jarring', diasgreements may be jarring to those who disagree, but 'fitting in' involves not obviously - and deliberately - annoying, baiting or creating dissension. Creating annoyance is, happily, usually evident to sensitive souls!
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

That was my reading of it, too, as opposed to what people might choose to put in the 'My Profile' section.
Because of fat finger syndrome, I rather too often hit a forumite's name rather than the thread or response, so it probably looks as if I'm visiting many more Profile pages than I really intend to.

Just looked at JLW's profile as I couldn't find the Usa! thread which I know she started, so not just Fat Finger Syndrome (I abbreviated that, but then decided not to).

I'm not saying LMcD is a sensitive soul - it could be he thought his time better spent in a different setting. But, as in his last post:

The posts in question were no longer evident the next morning.

One of the things that makes forums like this work is the substantial overlap between member 'characteristics'. It is more conducive to discussion when people are like minded and talking about topics that interest them. It's hardly surprising, given what has caused us to come to the forum in the first place (classical music and R3). There are plenty of other forums out there if one feels they don't fit the profile, here.

What DID happen to LMcD, I wonder? I ask merely because I'm about to post on her/'his 'Reasons To Be Cheerful' thread. Perhaps I'm thicker-skinned than her/him, but - who knows? - perhaps (s)he might return some day.

I have a tendency to Eric Morecombe syndrome, typing letters in the wrong order.

Well, IIRC (and I only read the posts quickly late the previous evening) perhaps LMcD felt his contributions weren't at all appreciated here. By some, at least - the membership in general weren't around to give a representative view I would say. I've adopted the approach of ignoring what irritates or is uninteresting but that's just me.

I'm not aware of the IT in relation to forums - perhaps the posts are lost in time, of there is a vault in the dungeon of FoR3 to which they have been consigned. (There used to be a dungeon which existed here with no links but its not been mentioned in many a year).
