As she now has two young children, she may want to take on opportunities closer to her home in Salzburg.
Does taking on the role of Principal Guest Conductor constitute 'leaving the CBSO'? I realise I am ignorant of such things but it does suggest to me a wish to maintain working contact, but also leaves her options open as to what work, and where, she takes up post 2022.

If Rattle, who will remain Conductor Emeritus for life of the LSO, can be said to be leaving the LSO, then I think it is fair also to say that Mirga, who will only be Guest Conductor for a year, is leaving the CBSO. Unless they have fallen out, it is not unusual for conductors to retain a relationship with orchestras they have led.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Fair enough. As I said I do not know about such things, so it's useful to have the various distinctions clarified.

Another one goner going. This country will be a land without music again, if we are not careful.

You may be right - I hope you're not - but if you find yourself feeling low you can always tune into Radio 3 at 5.00 a.m. on Saturday mornings!

The complete removal of hope for a better future is perhaps not the way to go...

I think some inaccuracy has crept in, possibly replicating reporting elsewhere.

The email I (as a CBSO "Member") got contained the statement:

"She will continue as Music Director for an additional season until summer 2022 and will then move to the position of Principal Guest Conductor"

It may be that that guest tenure is only for a year but that isn't stated anywhere and would be rather perfunctory and unusual.

It also isn't the obvious implication of https://cbso.co.uk/news/mirga-extends-contract - though again it doesn't explicitly rule it out.

The only place this interpretation seems to be stated is by N Lebrecht. He may have the inside line, or...

That's fair. I had misread her statement that she would "become Principal Guest Conductor in the 2022/23 season" as meaning it was a short-term appointment, but on reflection it is just as likely to mean that she will continue in this new post from then onwards.

However, I would point out that Rattle leaving the LSO was also presented by them as him extending his contract; an orchestra's PR team is always going to present their MD's resignation in the best possible light. The big difference is of course that he is also moving to Munich, whereas Mirga has not (as far as we know) signed on anywhere else.

If his 5 year contract started in 2015 then going to 2023 would be an extension, as per this https://lso.co.uk/more/news/1625-sir...ntil-2023.html
Slightly more confusing is this https://www.gramophone.co.uk/classic...hony-orchestra which suggests a two year delay to 2017 before assuming his role. However there is also a quote from him
When asked about the tenure at today's press conference, Rattle replied, 'this is my last big job.'
