The Wall of Sound, as I understand the term, was the effect created by bouncing back tracks, i.e. recording the playing over a track which itself was being played back, effectively doubling and trebling the overall number of instruments on the overall recording, but with the sound, and the tape itself, inevitably degraded as a result of the bouncing, leading to a reduction in dynamics, hence a “wall”. This ultimate effect is not so very far away from the “brickwalling” effect of removing dynamics that was so popular about 20 years ago, but was entirely technically created. The Wall of Sound was far more organic.
