Someone who I feel was 'of my time', a household name. I had her "Cooking in a Bedsitter" .
She was a supporter of the then Liberal Party, and someone I knew (involved with producing the literature) reported, outraged, that she had apparently turned up at a byelection HQ offering to help, and was sent out delivering leaflets.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world. -
Very sad, though she had reached a good age - Katharine Whitehorn was an ace of a lady.

There's a series running on Radio 4 extra inspired by 'Cooking in a Bedsitter', ff, and Katherine makes the odd appearance. I was presented with this slim volume on going to university. It proved comfortingly useful, despite the fact that I never actually lived in a bedsitter while a student. When recently looking for something similar to give my Cambridge-bound daughter, I soon realised how far teenage diets and eating habits had moved on in forty-five years.Originally posted by french frank View Post

One of two ladies I think of as speaking in baritone - the other being my mum, who would always sing hymns in church in the men's register. I'm sure I was given a copy too when I went to university in 1976. I can't find it now, it must have been "lost" somewhere along the way.
