    David Rose meets Richard Strauss

One of my ever-helpful English cousins has come up with a cunning plan, the aim of which is to encourage more people to give opera a try by providing alternative titles in the hope that this might broaden the appeal of this art form. Slightly shocked as I was by his suggestion that I start the ball rolling by suggesting 'Salome, or The Stripper', I offer a couple of hopefully more tasteful alternatives:
'Siegfried, or The Pony Trekker's Guide To The Rhine'
'Woyzeck, or Could I Have A Pea Please, Bob?' (This apparently refers to a children's TV quiz called 'Blockbusters')

Oh dear, I think I'm going to forever imagine John the Baptist in Morecambe and Wise's refrigerator now rather than in that ominous cistern...

Pelleas et Melisande, or, Don't ask me, I'm lost too.
